Chilli Chicken gravy recipe is a famous indo-chinese chicken recipe which is very popular among chicken lovers .Chicken is my all-time favorite .I try innovating mostly in chicken dishes like Ginger Chicken, Shredded Chicken and Chicken Korma. But my favorite is this chinese chilli chicken gravy recipe. This restaurant-style recipe can be made at home using simple ingredients and goes well with chinese fried rice, porota or chapathi.

What is Chilli Chicken?

Chilli chicken is a sweet, spicy and slightly sour gravy recipe made with chicken, bell peppers, garlic, chilli, tomato sauce and soya sauce.

It is basically a chicken dish that is made with boneless chicken pieces. They are marinated in soya sauce, black pepper powder, salt, vinegar, corn flour, and egg. Marinated chicken pieces are then deep fried and again seasoned with sauces.

The vegetarian version can be substituted by paneer ,tofu, soya or mushroom.

Chilli Chicken Dry versus Chilli chicken Gravy

Chilli Chicken Dry is more of a appetizer or starter type .The cooking process is the same the only difference is in the dry version we don’t add corn flour but in Chilli chicken gravy recipe we add corn flour for the gravy.

Ingredients

For marinating the chicken:

  • Boneless Chicken(500gm): I prefer boneless chicken cut into small pieces but bone in chicken can be used.
  • Vinegar: Used for marination.
  • Spice Powders: 1 tbsp Pepper Powder and 1tsp chilli powder(optional)
  • Corn flour and Maida:This is for the crispy coating
  • Egg:1 No
  • Sauces: Soya Sauce and Tomato sauce .
  • Salt to taste.

For making the chilli chicken gravy:

  • Capsicum: 1/4 cup cut into cubes. I prefer green ones to make it colorful you can add the red on also.
  • Onions: 1/4 Cup , cut into cubes.
  • Spice Powders: 1 tbsp Pepper Powder and 1tsp chilli powder.
  • Green chili:4 to 5 nos chopped
  •  Garlic cloves :7 finely chopped
  • Sauces: Soya Sauce and Tomato sauce .You can also add chilli sauce for more spicy flavor.
  • Corn Flour:The main thickening agent for the gravy
  • Salt to taste.

How to make chilli chicken gravy step by step photos:

  1. Take the boneless chicken in a mixing bowl and to it add soya sauce, tomato sauce pepper powder, chili powder, egg, corn flour, maida and salt. Marinate it for 30 mins.

2. Take a kadai and heat the oil. Deep fry the chicken pieces and drain of on the kitchen tissue.

3. Take another pan and heat oil on high flame .To it add chopped garlic and saute for 2 mins. Next add onion, green chili and capsicumand saute for another 2 mins.

4. Next add soya sauce,tomato sauce and chili sauce.Also add chili powder and pepper powder and saute for 5 mins.

6. Take a 1 cup water and to it add corn flour make a syrup.Lower the flame and add this mixture to it.

7. Keep on stirring on low flame until it boils. Next add the fried chicken to the mixture.

8. Saute it for 2 mins and switch off the flame. You can add a little bit of pepper if you want more spicy gravy. Adjust the sauces according to you taste.

9.Transfer it to a serving bowl and sprinkle some spring onion. Your Homemade Chilli Chicken Gravy Recipe is ready. Serve hot with fried rice or chapathi.

Tips to make chilli chicken gravy recipe

  • Usually everybody uses food color for bright red color but I dont prefer it. You can use kashmiri chilli powder or paprika for vibrant color.
  • Don’t over fry the chicken this makes it very hard.
  • Marinating the chicken for 2 hours or overnight makes the chicken more juicer and tasty.
  • Be careful while adding corn flour .Lumps will formed if added on high flame, so always add the mixture at low flame and keep on stirring.
  • You can add also chilli sauce if you want more spice.

  • 7 no's garlic finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp soya sauce
  • 1 tbsp tomato sauce
  • 1 tbsp corn flour
  • Salt to taste
